Sutter set for debut as Kings host Ducks
Hockey Betting Lines
12/22/2011 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Finding success on the road has been a burden for the Anaheim Ducks and they will take another shot at ending their lengthy struggles as the guest against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center.
The Ducks could find it even tougher to win tonight on the road when Kings head coach Darryl Sutter makes his anticipated debut. The Ducks are winless in their last 12 road games -- a franchise low -- and haven't prevailed away from home since a 3-2 win at Minnesota on Oct. 27. They are 2-10-4 on the road this season and last in the Pacific Division -- 11 points behind Los Angeles, which is currently fourth in the standings.
Anaheim has lost three in a row overall and has only four wins in its last 24 games. It has dropped the first three tests of a five-game road trip and suffered a 5-3 setback at Dallas on Monday. Teemu Selanne, Lubomir Visnovsky and Nick Bonino all scored in the second period for the Ducks, who got 28 saves on 33 shots by goaltender Jonas Miller.
"Seems like whenever we make a mistake, it's always in the back of our net," said Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau, who is 2-6-1 since taking over the team. "We come out good for short periods of time, then all of a sudden we get out of the game plan. I don't know if the focus is lost or what."
The Ducks have given up 14 goals during their losing streak and will close out the swing Monday at San Jose. Selanne is riding a nine-game point streak (3g, 10a), which is tied for the longest such streak in the NHL this season. Corey Perry has eight goals and 10 assists in his last 16 games.
Meanwhile, Sutter was officially named head coach of the Kings on Tuesday and will make his debut this evening. He has guided an NHL team to the playoffs in 10 of 11 seasons as a head coach and takes over for Terry Murray, who was fired December 12 following a 13-12-4 start. John Stevens coached the Kings on an interim basis for the last four games (2-2-0).
Sutter inherits a team that is coming off a 3-2 shootout victory at Toronto on Monday in the finale of a four-game series. Dustin Brown scored the only goal of the shootout and added a tally in regulation, while Justin Williams lit the lamp for Los Angeles, which got 31 saves from Jonathan Quick.
"We have a bunch of guys on this team that can lead," said Brown. "We have guys who have been around this league for a while and know how to get things done."
The Kings hope to stop a three-game home losing streak tonight and are 8-9-1 in the City of Angels this season. Brown has a goal in two of the past three games and Williams has three points in the last two games. The Kings are 8-0-0 when scoring three-plus goals in a game.
Los Angeles has taken two of three meetings with Anaheim so far this season and has won five of the previous eight encounters at Staples Center. The lone matchup in LA resulted in a 2-1 shootout victory for the Kings.

NFL Football Betting OnlineIs there such a thing as a trap game in the NFL?
I once asked that question to Pete Korner, who at the time was office manager and a senior linesmaker for Las Vegas Sports Consultants.
Korner almost ripped my head off. There is no such thing as a trap game, he loudly berated me. It’s a myth. The numbers are made using power ratings, he said.
There are trap games, though. They just might not be what you think. The perception is of a good team, say Philadelphia, laying a small number against New Orleans.
Using the highly-respected power ranking from The Gold Sheet, you’d find the Eagles with a power rating of 4 and the Saints at 8. When you factor the game being played in New Orleans, you could see why the line opened so short at less than a field goal.
For some, this makes it enticing to take the Eagles. That’s not a real trap game, though.
A real trap game, says professional gambler Dave Malinsky, is thinking you’re getting value betting a bad team, which brings us to the Oakland Raiders-Denver Broncos matchup.
The Raiders are +15 in this long-standing division rivalry. Denver is on a short week having dispatched Baltimore Monday. However, the Raiders haven’t covered the spread their last 10 games.
Many bettors don’t trust the Raiders to give a full effort. Few think much of Art Shell and his Oakland’s coaching staff.
So oddsmakers have to do something to make Oakland attractive if they hope to get equal action.
Now Malinsky is a value shopper. But he won’t touch the Raiders even getting more than two touchdowns.
“I try to eliminate the undisciplined, unfocused teams because they’re the ones most likely to suffer the bad beats,” he said.
Near the top of Malinsky’s list of stay-away teams is the Miami Dolphins, who have yet to cover a spread this season.
“Whatever you think of Nick Saban, you have to look at the penalties and turnovers,” Malinsky said.
It’s easy to point out the Dolphins failed to get the money this past week against New England because Olindo Mare missed a field goal and had another field goal blocked. But even though the Dolphins outgained the Patriots, 283-213, they committed eight penalties.
Bad teams not only cost themselves victories, but pointspread covers as well. The Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers are two more examples.
The Cardinals couldn’t have been in a better position this past Sunday, up 14-0 at home against a mediocre Kansas City Chiefs squad. But they couldn’t hold it. The Packers got a push against St. Louis, but also could have won losing by three when Brett Favre fumbled at the St. Louis 11-yard line with 44 seconds left.
“The Packers were in a position to beat Philadelphia, too,” Malinsky said. “But they couldn’t even cover double digits.
“These teams just make mistakes and it costs you … they always will look good from a value standpoint. They really will. But that’s the trap.”
Houston and Tennessee rank among the six-worst teams. Malinsky wouldn’t be afraid to take either of these teams, however, if the price were high enough.
The Texans are bad, Malinsky said, but they have some discipline. The Titans showed they could not only come up with an outstanding game plan, but execute it as well, losing by one to the Colts on the road as an 18 ?-point underdog this past Sunday.
“Jeff Fisher is a worker,” Malinsky said of the Titans coach. “I’m not sure how hard Art Shell wants to work when he gets out of bed.”
Fisher, though, could be out as Tennessee coach after this season. Is he still worth backing in the right spot, with the right price, as a lame duck coach?
“It’s in his nature to keep working hard and not worry about any possible lame duck status,” Malinsky said. “He’s coaching for his resume.”

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.
NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.
Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.
Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
